Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs to do a Security Industry
Firearms Accreditation Course? Any
Security Officer who needs to carry a Firearm on duty must do
this course.
What is involved in the course? You will learn about the justifications for
the use of a handgun, the laws relating to handguns, use of force,
handgun retention, correct carriage and storage, cleaning and
maintenance, and much more. As well as the theoretical side,
there is the practical component to show you how to handle handguns safely and correctly.
Is this course approved?Yes. The courses that we conduct are approved
by the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and the NSW
Police.
Do you get a manual?Yes. If you complete the ACT course, you will
receive a manual which Safecity has produced. It has been approved
by the Australian Federal Police, and is part of a course which
has been nationally accredited. When you complete the NSW course,
you receive a manual which is a standard document in use throughout
the NSW Security Industry.
My friend has a manual, can I use
it? Youcan use it to study at home,
but the police require that we issue you with your own copy of
the manual.
Is there an exam? Yes.
There is a written assessment on the laws, and a practical assessment
during range practise. All Safecity's courses are competency
based.
What happens if I fail the exam? You can attend another course and do the assessment
activity again. The course is free, but you will be required
to pay for the ammunition that you use.
Do I need to have any licences before
I do the course? Yes. You must have
your NSW 1AB Security Industry Licence
Once I have done this course, am
I entitled to carry a firearm?Not
immediately. Under the new Firearms Act, you need to apply for
a Category H (Handgun) licence before you can work as an armed
Security Officer.
My friend works as an armed Security
Officer in NSW without a licence.Yes,
that may be true. Unfortunately there are some unethical employers
who will release a firearm to unlicensed officers. Remember that
if you are unable to produce a licence to Police (and they are
likely to ask) you will be charged with an offence as well as
your employer. You are not licensed refuse to do armed guard
work.
I already have a Category H licence
for my target pistol, can I use that? No.
Target Pistol Licences cannot be used for Security.
How do I get a Category H licence?
First, you must complete a Firearms
Accreditation Course. The instructor will issue you with an Approval
Certificate. If you are applying for a licence in the ACT, you
take your certificate to the ACT Firearms Registry and apply
for the licence in person. If you are applying for your NSW licence,
you send a copy of your Approval to NSW Firearms Registry with
your application.
Can you lodge my licence application
for me? No. Only you can apply for
your licence.
How much does the licence cost?$100 for 5 years.
Once I have my licence, can I carry
any sort of firearm at work? No,
you can only carry a handgun. If you have only completed the
revolver course, you can only carry a revolver while on duty.
If your employer needs you to carry a semiautomatic pistol, you
must complete a one day course which deals specifically with
the semiautomatic pistol.
How long is the Revolver Course? The NSW revolver course is two days.
How long is the Semiauto course? This is an additional one day course.
Can I just do the Semiauto course?
No. First, you must complete the
Revolver course, then you can do the Semiauto course.
Do I have to do any other training?
Yes. Once a year you must attend
a reaccreditation. This is a one day course that you are required
to attend to maintain your licence. It is a refresher course
which ensures that your training and knowledge are up to date.
How much do these courses cost? The NSW revolver accreditation course is $195,
and the Semiauto course is $140. If you need the ACT and the
NSW accreditation, it is only an extra $30. A reaccreditation
is $95.
Can I claim these costs on my tax?
All these expenses can be claimed
on your tax.
How do I enrol in the course?Phone our office and book a firearms course.
When we receive your deposit of $100.00 we will confirm your
place on the course and send you the firearms training manual
for prior study. The balance is payable on the day of the course.
